This week's TTT topic is probably one of my favorites. I love reminiscing and the air of nostalgia that goes along with remember my younger bookworm self. These memories, I hold this to close to my heart. Let me share with you some of my fondest bookish memories.
1. My earliest memories of reading was me holding on to a newspaper and learning to read the news through the help of our landlord. He was like a grandfather to me, he'd invite me to his store, give me a newspaper and would teach me how to read.
2. My first library experience was my Chinese school's library. St. Jude Early Learning Institute's library was located at the top floor on one of the buildings. Little kindergartener April back then was in awe of the fact that I can borrow books, take them home and read them to my heart's content. I remember that feeling to this day!
3. National Bookstore, a popular bookstore chain in the Philippines, as my happy place. I could walk around there for hours and be entranced. So many books and stationaries! I also remember wishing I had a lot of money so I could buy all the books and stationaries! Lol.
4. Knowing that it'll be my idea of paradise, my parents took me to M/V Doulos. It was a floating bookstore. Literally a ship that's a bookstore which used to sail around the world. The ship came to my hometown and I can still remember my heart beating so fast while going aboard and see this amazing ship full of books for the first time.
5. My mother bought me my first audiobook from M/V Doulos, a floating bookstore. It was an Alice in Wonderland read along cassette tape. To this day, I can still recite parts of the book.
6. I discovered my love for reading book series after I borrowed Sweet Valley Kids from St. Jude's library. Francine Pascal's series taught me about a state called California. Here I was this Filipina girl who knows nothing about America except that it's a beautiful country with pine trees, snow and lots of Hershey chocolates. I read this series in different stages in my life and introduced me to American culture.
7. While a lot of kids love action comics, I fell in love with Archie comics. I used to borrow them from a friend in school, from libraries when they carry them or I'd save my money so I can afford to get one. My favorite character was Jughead. ^_^
8. In the Philippines, there's this popular powdered milk called Nido. They used to have a promo in which every box of milk has a small pocket book of fairytales, it was called Tales from Around the world. I wanted to collect each and every single one of these booklets. I think I even attempted to empty my piggy bank so I could buy boxes of milk! I just realized I was already a book hoarder back then. Lol.
9. My first signed MM romance book was shipped from Europe. It was from Cara Dee, a book called If We Could Go Back. My collection of signed books started from this one book. And here we are few years down the road.
10. Cordelia Kingsbridge, one of my favorite authors, was the first author I've virtually interacted with through comments. She was a guest in one of Facebook author's group. I remember telling myself not to say anything dumb, but true to April fashion, I dropped a funny comment, she responded and I was floored. That broke the fourth wall for me.
Awww.. lots of fond memories and I could go for 10 more...
What are some of your fondest bookish memories?
